Why Heat Matters for Discoids

Discoid roaches breed actively at room temperature, but their reproductive rate climbs noticeably with warmth. At 78-80°F, a mature colony produces nymphs reliably and quickly. Below 72°F, breeding slows. Below 65°F, discoids become sluggish and may stop reproducing until temperature climbs again.

If your colony sits in a cool basement or an air-conditioned room, heating isn't optional—it's the difference between a thriving colony and a stalled one. Even in a warm house, ambient temperature fluctuates overnight and seasonally. Consistent, controlled heat is what locks in consistent breeding.

Heat Mat Wattage Sizing

Heat mat wattage should match your bin volume and ambient temperature. This isn't about huge power—it's about the right amount of gentle, steady warmth.

For a 10-gallon bin (roughly 20L, the most common colony size) in a typical room (65-72°F ambient): a 10-15 watt mat is plenty. It will raise bin temperature 10-15°F above ambient, getting you to the target 78-80°F range without overshooting.

For a 20-gallon bin or larger: a 20-30 watt mat handles the job. The larger mass of substrate and roaches absorbs more heat, so you need more wattage to maintain the same temperature rise.

For a small 5-gallon starter bin: 8-10 watts is adequate, sometimes less.

A dial thermostat (discussed below) prevents the mat from running all the time. A mat without a thermostat cycling on and off can overheat the bin to dangerous levels—80°F quickly becomes 85-90°F, killing roaches. Never run a heat mat uncontrolled.

Heat Mat Placement: Side vs. Bottom

Where you place the mat matters because roaches respond to thermal gradients. They'll move toward or away from heat depending on the temperature profile.

Bottom Placement

Placing the mat under the bin creates warmth from below. This heats the substrate and lower layers of the bin first. Roaches naturally cluster in warm areas, so they'll congregate on the warm substrate. This tends to create a hot zone—roaches piling in one area of the bin.

Bottom placement works, but it can create uneven heating. Roaches in the warm zone breed well, but roaches in cooler upper areas might not. It also concentrates roaches in one spot, which can increase aggression and waste piling in that one zone.

Side Placement

Taping or velcroing the mat to one side of the bin (not underneath) distributes heat more evenly across the container. Roaches can move toward or away from the heated wall as needed, creating a temperature gradient from warm side to cooler side. This gives roaches choice and distributes them more evenly across the bin instead of clustering them all in one spot.

Side placement is generally preferred by experienced breeders because it reduces localized pileups, improves air circulation, and maintains a more stable temperature throughout the colony without hot spots.

Thermostat Selection and Setup

A thermostat is essential. It maintains the target temperature by cycling the heat mat on and off based on a probe sensor placed inside the bin. When the bin hits your set temperature, the thermostat cuts power to the mat. When temperature drops, it turns the mat back on.

A dial thermostat is the simplest and most reliable option for roach colonies. Set the dial to the target temperature—80°F is standard for discoids—and the thermostat handles the rest. Cost is $20-35, and reliability is high.

Digital thermostats work too if you prefer precise readouts, but they're not necessary for roach breeding. The dial thermostat method has been used for decades and works consistently.

Install the temperature probe sensor deep in the substrate, roughly in the middle of the bin (horizontally and vertically). This reads the actual temperature the roaches are experiencing, not the air above the substrate or the inside of the lid. Misplaced probes lead to inaccurate temperature control.

Temperature Monitoring and Adjustment

After setup, use a separate thermometer (a basic stick-on aquarium thermometer or a digital probe) to verify actual bin temperature. Place it where roaches gather, not on the heat mat itself. Record the temperature for a few days to confirm the thermostat is holding steady at your target.

Small fluctuations (78-82°F) are fine—roaches tolerate a 2-4°F range without issue. If the bin hits 75°F or drops below, the thermostat dial might need adjusting upward. If it climbs above 85°F, dial it back down.

In hot seasons, you might find your bin running too warm even with the thermostat at minimum. This usually means the ambient room temperature is already high. In that case, you might dial the thermostat to its lowest setting and accept that the bin runs 78-82°F during summer (still fine for discoids). Alternatively, move the colony to a cooler room or crack a window nearby for air flow.

Avoiding Common Heating Mistakes

Running a heat mat without a thermostat is the number-one mistake. The mat stays on until ambient temperature doesn't draw away heat anymore, and the bin can superheat. Roaches become lethargic, stop breeding, and can die at temperatures above 88-90°F.

Placing the mat directly under the bin without insulation is the second common error. If your bin sits on a tile floor or a metal shelf, cold underneath will pull heat from the mat even while it's running, wasting energy and making it harder to maintain target temperature. Place a bit of foam or cardboard under the bin to insulate it from the shelf, and put the mat on top of that—this insulates the bin and improves efficiency.

Using extension cords with heat mats: never leave an unattended extension cord draped across roach bins or other equipment. Route it safely to an outlet, secure it if possible, and don't create fire hazards. Most keepers keep the mat-thermostat-outlet setup compact and tidy.

The Setup Summary

For a standard 10-gallon discoid colony: a 10-15 watt mat placed on the side of the bin, controlled by a dial thermostat set to 80°F, with the probe sensor in the middle of the substrate. Verify temperature with a separate thermometer for a few days. This setup is simple, reliable, and gives you the consistent warmth discoids need to breed steadily.
