Chitin in Feeder Insects, Explained
Chitin comes up constantly in feeder discussions, almost always as a warning. The full picture is more interesting than "chitin is bad."
What Chitin Is
Chitin is a structural polysaccharide — the material an insect's exoskeleton is built from. Structurally it is a relative of cellulose, the material plants build cell walls from, and it does a similar job: it provides rigidity.
Why It Is a Problem in Feeding
Chitin is not readily digestible for most reptiles. A feeder with a heavy, hardened exoskeleton passes a large amount of indigestible material through the gut. In a small or young animal, that is the mechanism behind impaction — and it is why mealworms and superworms carry warnings that softer feeders do not.
Where BSFL Sit
Black soldier fly larvae have a moderate chitin load — soft when small, tougher as they grow. This is the practical reason small BSFL suit juvenile animals: you get the calcium without a hard shell.

The Other Side
Chitin is also studied as a beneficial dietary component. It behaves somewhat like dietary fibre, and there is research interest in chitin as an immune stimulant in fish and poultry. The same molecule in frass is being studied for its effect on plant defences.
The honest summary: chitin is a real constraint when feeding hard-shelled insects to small reptiles, and a genuinely open research question everywhere else. Both are true.
