Can a Dart Frog Eat Mealworms?

No — mealworms are not appropriate for a dart frog.

Mealworms are the feeder almost everyone starts with, and on the numbers they are the weakest common feeder there is.

Mealworms carry about 133 mg/kg of calcium. Black soldier fly larvae carry about 9,340 — roughly seventy times as much. Mealworms run a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of around 1:25, the worst of any feeder in common use.

That ratio is the part that matters, and it is more than "low in calcium." Phosphorus competes with calcium for absorption. A feeder this far out of balance does not merely fail to supply calcium — it works against the calcium the animal already has. This is why dusting cannot fully fix a mealworm: the powder adds calcium to the outside while the ratio inside is still pulling the other way.

They are also about 20% protein and 13% fat, with a hard, chitin-heavy exoskeleton that gets tougher as the worm grows — the reason mealworms carry an impaction warning that soft-bodied feeders do not.
