Can Bearded Dragons Eat Silkworms Every Day?
Can Bearded Dragons Eat Silkworms Every Day?
Technically yes — silkworms are safe to feed daily. At just 1% fat with zero chitin, there are no safety concerns with daily silkworm feedings. However, 2-3 times per week is the recommended frequency because silkworms alone do not provide enough protein for a bearded dragon's daily needs.
Why 2-3x Per Week Is Better Than Daily
Silkworms contain approximately 9% protein on an as-fed basis. Discoid roaches contain approximately 20% protein. A bearded dragon eating only silkworms would need to consume far more individual worms to meet its daily protein requirement — and even then, the protein density is too low for growing juveniles that need maximum protein for bone and muscle development.
The optimal approach: use discoid roaches as the daily protein staple (20% protein, 7% fat) and rotate silkworms in 2-3 times per week for their unique benefits — ultra-low fat (1%), exceptional moisture (83%), zero chitin, and the serrapeptase enzyme that no other feeder provides.
The Exception: Picky Beardies
If your bearded dragon has gone off food and silkworms are the only thing it will eat, then yes — feed silkworms daily until the appetite crisis resolves. Getting nutrition into a fasting reptile is more important than perfect macronutrient ratios. Once your beardie is eating reliably again, transition back to a roach-based staple with silkworms as the premium supplement.
The Ideal Beardie Week
- 4 days: Discoid roaches (protein) + vegetables
- 2-3 days: Silkworms (low-fat) + vegetables
- 1-2 days: BSFL (calcium) and/or hornworms (hydration)
