Can Bearded Dragons Eat BSFL Every Day?
Can Bearded Dragons Eat BSFL Every Day?
Juvenile bearded dragons: yes, as part of a mixed feeding. Baby beardies can receive 10-20 BSFL daily alongside their primary feeders (discoid roach nymphs) to maximize calcium intake during the critical growth phase.
Adult bearded dragons: 2-3 times per week is better. While BSFL are safe to eat daily, their 14% fat content is higher than the ideal daily staple. Adults do better with BSFL as a 2-3x/week calcium supplement alongside a leaner daily staple like discoid roaches (7% fat).
The Ideal BSFL Schedule by Age
| Age | BSFL Frequency | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Baby (0-3 mo) | Daily (10-20, part of mix) | Max calcium during rapid growth; higher metabolism burns fat |
| Juvenile (3-8 mo) | 3-4x per week | Still growing, high calcium demand but starting to slow |
| Adult (14+ mo) | 2-3x per week | Lower metabolism, obesity risk increases with fat-heavy feeders |
Why Not BSFL as the Only Feeder?
BSFL are extraordinary for calcium (9,340 mg/kg, no dusting needed) but they are not a complete diet. At 17% protein and 14% fat, they have lower protein and higher fat than discoid roaches (20% protein, 7% fat). A beardie eating only BSFL would get insufficient protein and excessive fat over time.
The optimal approach: roaches for daily protein, BSFL for calcium supplementation. This combination provides complete nutrition.
The Complete Beardie Week
- Monday/Wednesday/Friday/Sunday: Discoid roaches (calcium-dusted) + vegetables
- Tuesday/Thursday: 10-20 BSFL (no dusting needed) + vegetables
- Saturday: 2-3 hornworms (hydration) + vegetables
