Black Soldier Fly Larvae vs Composting Worms
Anyone setting up an organic waste system runs into this choice. The framing is usually wrong: these are not two ways of doing the same job.
What Each One Is Good At
Black soldier fly larvae handle wet, nitrogen-rich, rapidly rotting material — food scraps, meat, dairy, spoiled produce. The exact material that ruins a worm bin. They work fast, in weeks.
Composting worms handle bedding-type material and vegetable scraps, more slowly, and produce worm castings — a finished, stable, well-understood soil product.

The Cold Problem
This is the deciding factor for most people. Black soldier fly activity falls off sharply as temperatures drop, and in a temperate climate an outdoor bin is seasonal. Worm bins keep working through more of the year.
Running Both
The combination is better than either alone, and it is what a lot of experienced setups end up doing: BSFL take the food waste, including everything a worm bin cannot handle, and the finished frass goes into the worm bin to be stabilised into castings.
You get protein out of the first stage and a finished soil product out of the second.
