Are Silkworms Good for Leopard Geckos? Complete Guide
Are Silkworms Good for Leopard Geckos? Yes — Excellent.
Silkworms are one of the best supplemental feeders for leopard geckos. At 1% fat (the lowest of any feeder), zero chitin (no impaction risk), and 83% moisture (exceptional hydration), they address the three biggest nutritional concerns for captive leos: obesity, impaction, and dehydration.
Why Silkworms Are Perfect for Leos
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Prevents tail obesity | 1% fat — 13x leaner than mealworms (13%), 7x leaner than roaches (7%) |
| Zero impaction risk | No chitin — unlike mealworms (high chitin, impaction risk for juveniles) |
| Hydration support | 83% moisture — leos often do not drink from water dishes |
| Breaks mealworm fixation | Unique appearance triggers feeding in leos that refuse other foods |
| Serrapeptase enzyme | May support digestive and immune health |
The Mealworm Fixation Fix
Many leopard geckos raised exclusively on mealworms develop "mealworm fixation" — refusing to eat anything else. This is a common and frustrating problem because a mealworm-only diet delivers 13% fat (contributing to obesity) and a terrible Ca:P ratio of 0.04:1 (contributing to MBD). Silkworms are one of the most effective tools for breaking this fixation — their unique pale appearance and slow wriggling movement are different enough from mealworms to trigger fresh interest in picky leos.
Feeding Guide
3-5 small to medium silkworms per feeding, 2-3 times per week. Dust with calcium + D3. Pair with discoid roach nymphs (daily protein) and BSFL (calcium — no dusting needed).
Keep a dish of plain calcium powder in the enclosure — many leos voluntarily lick it for additional calcium.
