Discoid Roaches vs BSFL: Which Feeder Insect Is Better?

Discoid Roaches vs BSFL: Complete Feeder Insect Comparison

Discoid roaches and black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are two of the most nutritionally valuable feeder insects available — but they fill completely different roles in your reptile's diet. Roaches are your protein workhorse. BSFL are your calcium powerhouse. Understanding the difference means you can build a rotation that covers both macronutrient needs without over-relying on supplements.

At All Angles Creatures, we breed both discoid roaches and sell premium BSFL — so this comparison is based on firsthand experience raising, shipping, and feeding both to hundreds of species.

Nutrition Side-by-Side

Metric Discoid Roaches BSFL
Protein 20% 17%
Fat 7% 14%
Calcium (mg/kg) 800 9,340
Ca:P Ratio 0.77:1 1.52:1
Moisture 61% 61%
Gut-loadable? Yes — highly No

When to Use Discoid Roaches

Discoid roaches should be your daily protein staple. At 20% protein and only 7% fat, they deliver the highest protein-to-fat ratio of any common feeder. They are gut-loadable — meaning you can boost their vitamin and mineral content by feeding them nutrient-dense vegetables 24-48 hours before offering them to your reptile. This makes roaches a customizable nutrition delivery system.

  • Daily feeding for bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons, monitors, tegus
  • 3-5x per week as the primary protein source in any rotation
  • All life stages — from small nymphs for juveniles to adult roaches for large reptiles
  • Long shelf life — roaches live 6-12 months with basic care

When to Use BSFL

BSFL should be your calcium supplement feeder. At 9,340 mg/kg calcium with a positive 1.52:1 Ca:P ratio, they are the only common feeder insect that delivers more calcium than phosphorus. This means every BSFL your reptile eats actively builds calcium stores rather than depleting them — no dusting powder required.

  • 1-3x per week as a calcium-boosting supplement alongside roaches
  • Juveniles and gravid females with elevated calcium demands
  • Species prone to MBD — bearded dragons, chameleons, leopard geckos
  • Reduce supplement dependency — fewer dustings needed when BSFL are in the rotation

They Are Complementary, Not Competing

The best reptile diet uses both. Discoid roaches provide the protein foundation 3-5 days per week. BSFL provide natural calcium 1-3 days per week. Together, they cover the two most critical nutritional needs — protein and calcium — from whole food sources rather than synthetic powders.

Add silkworms for low-fat variety and hornworms for hydration, and you have the most complete feeder rotation available.

Storage Comparison

Factor Discoid Roaches BSFL
Shelf life 6-12 months 2-3 weeks
Temperature Room temp (70-90°F) Cool (50-60°F)
Feeding required? Yes — gut-load with vegetables No — do not feed
Smell None None
Noise None None

The Bottom Line

If you can only buy one feeder, buy discoid roaches — they are the best all-around daily staple. If you can buy two, add BSFL for calcium. If you can buy four, add silkworms and hornworms for the complete rotation.
