Live Mealworms — Classic Feeder Insect

Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) are one of the most widely available feeder insects. At approximately 20% protein, they deliver good protein content and are extremely easy to store — just place them in the fridge and they go dormant for weeks. They are best used as an occasional supplement for adult reptiles, not as a sole staple.

Note: Mealworms are not recommended for juvenile bearded dragons under 6 months due to impaction risk from tough chitin. For a safer option, use discoid roach nymphs or silkworms (zero chitin). For the best daily staple, try discoid roaches — higher protein, lower fat, better Ca:P ratio, and no smell or noise.
